Shadow an Engineer

Shadow-an-Engineer is an exciting opportunity for high school students who have been admitted to The Grainger College of Engineering. Running from February through the end of April, this program allows prospective students to gain an authentic, first-hand look at life as a Grainger engineer at UIUC.

Participants are matched with current Grainger students (hosts) who are pursuing the same major. During the visit, shadows will follow their host through a typical day on campus, attending classes, exploring facilities, and experiencing campus culture from a student’s perspective.

The host and shadow will coordinate a meeting time and location in advance, typically at a central spot on campus. The schedule and duration of the visit may vary depending on the host’s availability, but all logistics will be discussed and confirmed in the week leading up to the visit.

If you have any questions about the program or your upcoming visit, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to help make your experience as smooth and meaningful as possible!

Shadows And Their Hosts!

“After I shadowed the engineers at UIUC I knew it was the place for me. They took the time out of their day to walk me through what a day in the life of a mechanical engineer was like, showing me not only the impressive academic facilities but also what made UIUC engineers stand out from the rest. They were thoughtful and took genuine interest in my past experiences, offering me advice for my upcoming freshman year. Showing me their research projects and organizations gave me an idea of what I wanted to do when I came here. I got to sit down with their friends so I could get a variety of answers to my questions about anything. They showed me that the engineers at UIUC were not only incredibly intelligent but also super friendly, helpful, and compassionate, and that’s what sold me!” - Rohan Ramkumar, 2023 Shadow
